Job Title: Patient Advocate

Classification: Non-Exempt/Hourly

Reports To: Revenue Cycle Director

Position Type: Full-Time

Hours Worked/Shift: Monday - Friday

Summary :

Under the direct supervision of the Revenue Cycle Director and in collaboration with the Billing Manager, Administrator, Clinic Office Manager and Chief Clinical Officer, supports patient financial assistance programs and coordinates community resources for patients of Goodland Regional Medical Center.

This includes, but is not limited to, helping Goodland Regional Medical Center patients understand and complete Financial Assistance Applications, Slide Fee Scale Applications, Marketplace Insurance Options and Medicaid Presumptive Eligibility. This position is required to work with clinical departments and the finance department to support the comprehensive plan and goals in place that are aimed at meeting the needs of the patients while adhering to Federal, State, and Local agency compliance requirements and mandates.

The Patient Advocate assists personnel of the facility, and patients of Goodland Regional Medical Center and/or their families in filling out Medicaid applications, assisting with questions and problems with Social Security and SSI.

This position requires an on-site presence during normal business hours to be available to meet the needs of Goodland Regional Medical Center patients, residents, and staff. However, travel may be authorized from time-to-time for outreach participation and training.

Essential Functions :

  1. Explain to patients the following information: Potential eligibility for public/governmental programs.
  2. Describe the features and benefits of health insurance coverage in general terms, including cost-sharing mechanisms like deductibles, co-pays or co-insurance and how these work, or affect the patient.
  3. Contact patients regarding financial expectations for pending services and collaborate with billing and prior-authorization staff.
  4. Maintain tracking spreadsheets for patient scheduling status.
  5. Describe the different metal tiers and how the benefits may change at different tiers based on the patient’s income. Describe what a summary of benefits document is and where to locate a summary of benefits.
  6. Provide information in a manner that is culturally and linguistically appropriate to the needs of the population being served by the federal marketplace.
  7. Seek out and attend related training.
  8. Refer patients to appropriate community resources to help them meet basic needs including food, clothing, shelter, mental health services, etc.
  9. Coordinate and network with outside community resource agencies.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Minimum Experience: 1 to 3 months of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certifications/Licensures:

Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) certification
