Job Description

Position Summary

The Director of Development & Communications is responsible for overseeing the organization’s fundraising, marketing, communications, and volunteer programs. This role advances the agency’s mission by developing and executing strategies to enhance revenue generation, donor engagement, brand awareness, and community involvement. The Director works closely with senior leadership, board members, staff, and external partners to drive sustainable growth and impact.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Fundraising & Development

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy, including annual giving, major gifts, grants, corporate sponsorships, and special events.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, corporate partners, and foundations to increase financial support.
  • Oversee the research, writing, and submission of grant proposals and reports to secure and maintain funding.
  • Lead donor stewardship efforts, ensuring timely acknowledgements, impact reporting, and engagement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with leadership and board members to identify and cultivate major gift prospects.
  • Manage donor databases and fundraising software to track contributions, analyze giving trends, and generate reports.

Marketing & Communications

  • Develop and execute a strategic marketing and communications plan to enhance brand awareness, community engagement, and donor support.
  • Oversee the creation of compelling content for digital and print materials, including newsletters, social media, website, press releases, and annual reports.
  • Manage media relations and serve as a spokesperson for the agency when necessary.
  • Ensure consistent branding and messaging across all communication channels.
  • Leverage digital marketing strategies, including email campaigns, social media outreach, and online fundraising efforts.

Volunteer Program Management

  • Oversee the recruitment, training, and retention of volunteers to support the organization’s programs and events.
  • Develop volunteer engagement initiatives to enhance participating and impact.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with community partners to increase volunteer recruitment opportunities.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the executive team to align development and communication efforts with the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for leadership, board meetings, and funders.
  • Represent the organization of community events, networking opportunities, and conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience as outlined below:
  • Knowledge of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies and techniques, particularly in the area of major and planned gifts.
  • Demonstrated ability in proposal development and writing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for researching prospects.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and networking skills with large groups as well as with individuals.
  • Ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective major and planned giving donors and interact via telephone and in-person.
  • Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for diverse number of projects and complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated record of success in generating significant commitments from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Experience working with and managing consultants, contractors, vendors, and advisors.
  • Demonstrated record of supervising and leading a development team and working with Board members and fundraising volunteers.

Physical Demands

  • Typical physical demands of an office administrative position. Must work occasional nights and weekends.

Working Environment

  • Office environment.
  • Frequent travel within Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Supervision Received

  • Works under the direct supervision of EVP of Development & CAO.

Supervision Exercised

  • Supervises five (5) administrative professionals.
